My girlfriend and I decided to fly up to San Francisco for the day, that’s right, for the day. We left Long Beach at 7am and began our day with a couple of our friends. We planned on hitting the Farmers Market at the Ferry Building and then just running around till our flight at 7pm.
So we jumped on the BART(my first time….) and headed to the city. At times the BART sounds like it was going to derail like something out of “Die Hard”, but no scarier than a Prius doing 90mph down the hill from Victorville.
After a 30min ride we arrive t the Embarcadero Station and head over to the Ferry Building. Our game plan was to go around the building and then head inside.
We start on the south side of the building and you immediately you intake the smell of porky goodness. I seem to just walk past a number of vendors straight to the Roli Roti canopy.
You walk up and see the custom van turned into a rolling rotisserie. After you see the line of people it may deter you from standing in it. When you see and smell the meats stacked on the movable skewers it draws you in just out of curiosity. You think……hmmm, how good can it be?
Our strategy for places is for one to stand in line and the other to go get something else we may like. I walked around didn’t really see anything so I headed back.
When I got back to rr van she was just about to order. We ordered the Porchetta sandwich. It was made with the roasted pork, caramelized onions, greens, on a ciabatta roll. The kicker to the sandwich is the crunchy pork skin they chop and add to the pork.
“Simply the best pork sandwich I’ve ever had”
After the first bite I realized this sandwich was worth the trip up here by itself. I know there is so much good food in San Francisco, and this has to be up there on the “Why I Come Up Here” list. I hate to overstate something and ruin it for others, but I really enjoyed this sandwich.
The bonus was the potatoes we had on the side. They put these on the bottom of the meat rack and let all the drippings fall on them while they cook.
I’m sure everything they make tastes just as good, but it will be hard for me to go there and order something else. Maybe after 9-10 more sandwiches I’ll try something else. Maybe I enjoyed this more than most because of the unavailability for me.
For all you locals go and enjoy.
I shall return…….
