Langer’s Deli is just south of downtown LA. It’s located in an old neighborhood where it has been there for 65 years. I remember seeing this on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” show on the Food Channel. I knew this place was going on that “To Do” list.
I guess being from California we don’t get that thick cut pastrami. We get the joints with the thin slices like the Johnnies, The Hat or places like Golden Eagle. Don’t get me wrong, I like those places too, but this a whole different pastrami sandwich. I don’t think we got thick cut at Jerry’s Deli either.
Never being a big fan of rye bread I was willing to give it a go from what the guy on the TV said. He said the bread was twice baked so the crust would be crunchier and the inside was pillow soft. I figure the first time you try the house specialty you should have it in it’s original way. Langer’s is a James Beard Award winner.
The next week we headed off to try this “Best Ever” sandwich. We got lucky and go there right before the main crowd. I think we waited 5-10mins. Seems like after we sat down the line was out the door and around the building. I guess I wasn’t the only one watching(actually it’s like this everyday. They get a big crowd from county workers. They’re really close to downtown LA.
While being seated I did my usual tactic of “Food Sniping”, basically just seeing what everyone else was having. There was an assortment of different orders out there along with the famous #19. They were looking pretty tasty too, but’ m going to stick to the original plan. Our order came out pretty fast considering they an army of people working on the line.
At first glance it didn’t look like it was all that, so I dove in for my first bite……..WQW!!!
It was the most tender, juicy, and flavorful pastrami I’ve ever had. For one not being a rye bread person, I enjoyed theirs so much. Like I said being in SoCal we are not exposed to this type very often. After talking to a few friends that haven’t tried Langer’s, they’re making their way over little by little….
